On 4 September 2026, the Institut La Boétie published its fifth book, The State and the Citizens’ Revolution, with La Dispute.
This new collective volume is edited by the philosopher Isabelle Garo and brings together 22 authors, intellectuals and social science researchers. It opens with a foreword by Álvaro García Linera, former Vice-President of Bolivia, and concludes with an exceptional afterword by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, co-president of the Institut La Boétie and candidate in the 2027 presidential election: “Principles for a Democratic Refoundation of the French State”.
Less than a year before a presidential election that will be decisive for the future of France, this volume examines the issues surrounding the transformation of the state from the perspective of the radical left.
It first seeks to describe how neoliberalism has transformed the structure of the state over recent decades: its relationship with the market and finance, the transformation of public administration, and so forth.
It then explores several major questions: If the left comes to power tomorrow, how will it be able to transform society in depth? What lessons can be drawn from past experiences such as the Popular Front of 1936, Allende’s Chile, or Syriza’s defeat in Greece? What new institutions will it have to create in order to meet the major challenges of the future — ecological planning, public services, social security, and so on?
The book will be presented by Hadrien Clouet, sociologist and Member of Parliament for La France Insoumise; Stathis Kouvélakis, philosopher and member of the Scientific Council of the Institut La Boétie; and Marlène Rosano-Grange, political scientist and LFI activist. The event will be moderated by Matt Myers, historian.
